Mike Huckabee leads PPP National Republican Polling while Trump Fades

The spring weather saying, In like a Lion out like a Lamb, can also be said of Donald Trump's emergence onto the national stage of potential Republican candidates.  Trump quickly rose to the top and is now fading away.  Meanwhile, Mike Huckabee holds steady as the lead candidate for the 2012 Republican nomination.

2012 GOP Nomination Survey

If the Republican candidates for President in 2012 were Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney, and Donald Trump, who would you vote for?

Obama is now knotted at 45% with Mike Huckabee, winner of the 2008 caucuses and current leader of the early 2012 delegate race, per Tuesday’s release. In January, Obama led, 47-43.

If Trump were to lose the GOP nomination and launch an independent bid, he would eat severely into Romney’s support and essentially none into Obama’s. Obama would lead a three-way race with 43% over Romney’s 27% and Trump’s 21%. Trump brings Romney down from 81% to only 56% of the GOP and from 37% of independents to only 22%.
“Obama could have a much harder time of it in Iowa next year than he did in 2008- unless the Republicans bail him out with a Trump or Palin like nominee,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling.

Obama won Iowa by 10 in 2008. Now he's tied with Mike Huckabee and only leads Mitt Romney by 4:

Numbers suggest that if GOP goes with Romney, even a non-Trump far right 3rd choice could have big impact:

Trump polls at 21% as indy in Iowa. Gets 31% of GOP vote, runs ahead of Mitt with independents:

Obama leads Romney by 4 in Iowa. With Trump as 3rd candidate, Obama leads Romney by 16 there:

Mike Huckabee liked Best by Fox News Viewers

1. Mike Huckabee 45%/26% for +19%.

2. Sarah Palin 53%/37% for +16%.

3. Mitt Romney 40%/36% for +4%.

4. Newt Gingrich 41%/39% for +2%.

5. Barack Obama 27%/68% for -41%.

Those numbers are particularly problematic for Romney and Gingrich, it's hard to imagine someone taking the GOP Presidential nomination with only narrowly positive favorability numbers among Fox News viewers.

The tough math for Romney continues here. His standing fades rightward: he places second to Huckabee at 19% with moderates, but falls to third at 14% with the 43%-plurality somewhat conservative, and only fourth at 7% with the 34% who are very conservative.

Mike Huckabee Best Bet to beat Obama and turn North Carolina back to Red

In early March,  Mike Huckabee will be making four book tour stops in the battle ground state of North Carolina.  In 2008, McCain narrowly lost in the Tar Heel state to Obama flipping the red state to blue.  In order to turn that state back to it's historic red hue, Republicans best option would be to have Mike Huckabee at the top of the 2012 ticket.

PPP surveyed 500 Tennessee voters from February 9th to 13th. The survey’s margin of error is +/-4.4%.

"The former Arkansas governor has a pretty outstanding 50-29 favorability margin because Huckabee is liked the best across the partisan spectrum. All the others are seen negatively by both independents and all voters.  Not surprisingly then, Huckabee is the only candidate who soundly beats the president with independents, 51-40.

While a good chunk of Republicans are on the fence about whether to support Palin, Romney, or Gingrich, Huckabee locks up 90% of the GOP versus the others' 80-84%. Obama himself maintains 83-88% of Democrats' votes, and few Democrats are undecided."

"We wondered when we started doing these 2012 GOP Presidential polls if Gingrich's potential presence in the race would really hurt Huckabee's strength in the South but that does not seem to be the case. Polls we've conducted over the last three months have now found Huckabee at the top in North Carolina, West Virginia, South Carolina, Texas, Florida, Missouri, Virginia, and now Tennessee.

Mitt's favorability rating in Tennessee is only 47%, putting him way behind Huckabee's 74%, Palin's 67%, and even Gingrich's 52%. He has hovered right around the 10% mark in a lot of our Southern state polls and just does not seem likely to fare very well in the region next year."
